Follow the yellow brick road.

Task three: Aspects.

  • Lionel Essrog: what’s the most interesting or compelling aspect of his character? Who would you choose to play him, and why?

I thoroughly enjoy Lionel’s character, and how he’s so in touch with his emotions. We both like to eat a lot, almost as a sense of distressing, it works for me anyways. I wonder if Lionel eats as a way of coping with him inner battles, stress or if he just enjoys food. This makes me think of the scene where the homicide detective is trying to interview him, and Lionel goes into the sandwich shop to grab something to eat on the way home. I found it particularly clever when the detective assumed that Tourette’s was a person and Lionel went along with it, saying “let Tourette’s be the suspect and maybe I’ll get off the hook,” (Lethem, 110).

If this novel developed into a movie, I doubt I would be capable of playing such a compelling character. I definitely wouldn’t do it justice.

  • The tone of the book. The overall feeling or mood.

Different scenes in the novel portray different moods. The two scenes with Julia and Kimmery gives insight as to who Lionel is when he’s around women, and how it makes him feel. It’s interesting that compassion and lust mutes his Tourette’s the way it does, but as soon as the moods over he’s back to shouting random words that cross his mind. This mood is lust.

There’s a sense of dark humor when Frank Minna is in the back of the car dying, and Lionel doesn’t give into the darkness and sadness the way most people would given the situation, he handles it in a way that works best for him, and if I could, I would applaud him for following his intuition. Lionel is a leader, rather than the follower everyone expects him to be. His ultimate goal is to replace Minna, as an honor and with respect, all he wants to be is Frank Minna and once he sets his mind to it, it almost comes naturally.

 Task six: Psycho-therapy

When trying to identify what obstacles are preventing us from reaching our aspirations in life, we must take a moment to write down everything that makes us happy, focusing on the positivity above all else. The purpose of this exercise is to acknowledge that we are in control of our destiny, if we chose to write our path we shall do so, only choosing to include the right people, with the right attitude to join us on our path to ultimate happiness.  Our greatest obstacles in life are the negative ones. If exclude any negativity from joining you on your path, your pure positivity will guide you in the right direction. Lionel, you have the ability to do this with your eyes closed, I’ve seen this ability when you choose not to engage in the darkness around you, but rather turn it into a lesson to be learnt, or make it the butt of a joke. Nobody can choose your path for you but yourself, my suggestion is to surround yourself with the people you love, and who love you for who you are and see where life takes you. Good luck in your future endeavours.
